OECS Secretariat to Mount Special Mission to Grenada

The OECS Secretariat will send a team of experts to Grenada on September 20 to conduct a macro-economic and social impact assessment of the damaged caused by hurricane Ivan.

The team which will be led by OECS Director General Dr. Len Ishmael, include economists, social scientists, an environmentalist, a coastal engineer, a public health official, and agriculture and tourism specialists.

The decision to mount this mission follows discussions Friday between Dr. Ishmael and Grenada’s Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell. Dr. Ishmael was part of a high level delegation to Grenada which included CARICOM Secretary General Dr. Edwin Carrington and President of the Caribbean Development Bank Dr. Compton Bourne.

The impact assessment report will assist the Grenada government’s efforts to mobilize financial assistance for the country’s post Ivan recovery programme.

The OECS Secretariat had earlier sent economist Dr. Wayne Sandiford and coastal resources expert Mr. Keith Nichols to join CDERA’s emergency response team to Grenada. The Secretariat also coordinated a shipment of emergency relief supplies.

OECS Chairman, Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony of St. Lucia has visited Grenada, accompanied by his counterparts from Dominica and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and he is expected to issue a statement.

The Secretariat has created a photo library of Ivan’s damage to Grenada which can be accessed on its website at www.oecs.org.
